INTRODUCTION TO
COMPUTERS
To begin, a computer is a general-purpose device that is
programmed to do arithmetic or logical operations automatically.
The first substantial computer was the ENIAC machine by John W.
Mauchly and J. Presper Eckert.
Computers have been divided in five generations.
First generation: (1940-1956) Vacuum Tubes
Second generation: (1956-1963) Transistors
Third generation: (1964-1971) Integrated Circuits
Fourth generation: (1971-2010) Microprocessors
Fifth generation: (2010- present) Artificial Intelligence
PRE-COMPUTER
AGE
Pre 1930s
In 1930, Vannevar Bush, a
differential analyzer, attempts to
design a computer that will be
able to do many kinds of
scientific computations.
It is the herald of the modern
computer age.
FIRST
GENERATION
VACUUM TUBES
1940-1956
Computers used vacuum tubes as
basic component for memory and
circuitry for CPV.
The computers in this generation used
machine codes as programming
language.
Advantages: computers were the only
electronic during those days, and
were very fast to calculate.
Disadvantage: Results were mostly
unreliable and heavy air conditioning
was required.
SECOND
GENERATION
TRANSISTORS
1956-1963
The transition from first generation to
second generation of computers was
not abrupt.
Diode and transistor technology
formed the basis of electronics
switching time came around 0.3
microsecs.
Advantages: Computers were smaller
in size compared to the first
generation and more reliable.
Disadvantages: Cooling systems were
required and equipment was costly.
THIRD
GENERATION
INTEGRATED
CIRCUITS
1964-1971
Several innovations on computers
field.
ICs had a vision with gradual
processes.
There were development multilayered
printed circuits.
Advantages: Required less energy and
were more portable
Disadvantages: Still required air
conditioning and had highly
sophisticated production
FOURTH
GENERATION
MICROPORCESSOR
S
1972-2010
Computers emerged with development
of the VLSI, which means Vey Large
Scale Integration.
This generation brought more powerful,
compact and reliable computers.
It was the rise of the personal computer.
Advantages: it had a totally general
purpose and was faster than any of the
generations before.
Disadcantages: the higly sophisticated
technology requires for manufacture of
LSI Chips.
FIFTH
GENERATION
ARTIFICIAL
INTELLIGENCE
2010-PRESENT
The goal of this generation is to
develop devices which could respond
to natural language input.
Also wanted to have devices capable
of self-organization.
Advantages: Faster tan any other
computer generation, more reliable
and more complex.
Disadvantages: As the overall
technology grows, people rely more
on it.
ADA LOVELACE
THE
FOUNDER
OF SCIENTIFIC
COMPUTING
ADA LOVELACE
Lovelace was the worlds first
computer programmer back
since the mid 1800s.
She wrote the first computer
program in 1842.
She was an accomplished
mathematician, even though it
was rare during the era she
lived.
Ada Lovelace, nicknamed by
Babbage The Enchantress of
Numbers, was impressed by
Babbages Analytical Engine
design and between 1842 and
1843.
