    In the first 8 months of 2015, over 322,500 refugees and migrants arrived in Europe by sea, a significant increase from the same period in 2014. The majority came from Syria, Eritrea, Afghanistan, Nigeria, and Somalia. Over 2,750 people are known to have died or gone missing during sea crossings so far this year. Most arrived in Greece and Italy, coming mainly from Turkey, Libya, and other North African countries, risking their lives on the dangerous Mediterranean Sea route.
