Resources

Parts of a Book
Inform the students that books reveal important information to
the reader with just a quick inspection. Tell the students that
once they know where to look they will know where and when a
book was published, who wrote it and what information is in it.
Body, cover, copyright, dedication, preface, table of contents,
title page
Display the first transparency. Read the descriptions with the
students. Repeat with the second transparency.
Demonstrate the terms by showing students examples from
actual books.
Give students copies of the worksheet. Explain each item. If
your students are not familiar with these terms, you may want to
guide them through finding each item together rather than
expecting them to work independently.
If the students used a textbook, the assignment can be checked
as a group. If the students used different books, they may
exchange papers and books and check each others work. (This
is an excellent method for reinforcing the lesson.)
Nonfiction book or textbook for each student
Transparencies of Parts of A Book pt. 1 and 2.
