Introduction:
ThisisthefirstfullycomprehensiveTechnologyPlanforOurLadyofTepeyacHighSchool
(OLTHS).Weareasmallschoolwithasuccessfulcollegepreparatorycurriculumandrelatively
welldevelopedtechnologyresources.Theseresources,andthewaytheyareused,requireurgent
attentioninordertoremainsustainableforthelongterm.
ThisTechnologyPlansatisfiesanumberofrequirements.ItplacesOLTHSingreaterconformity
withtheTechnologyPlanoftheArchdioceseofChicagoOfficeofCatholicSchools(OCS).It
facilitatesOLTHSacquisitionofERatefundsforcriticalequipment.TheincludedAcceptable
UsePolicyfulfillsthedirectivesofCIPAinprotectingchildrenfromillegalandharmfulcontent
(FederalCommunicationsCommission).
ItisourhopethatthisTechnologyPlanwillplayavitalroleinthemissionofOurLadyof
TepeyacHighSchoolandplaceOLTHSonapathtowardgreatereducationalexcellenceand

OncehometoEasternEuropeanimmigrants,thesouthwestsideurbancommunityofLittle
VillageisnowoneofthelargestMexicanAmericancommunitiesintheUnitedStates.Formerly
St.CasimirHighSchool,ournamechangedin1990whentwoparishesmerged.Current
enrollmentstandsat14680%areLatinaand20%areAfricanAmerican.Inthepast,mostofour
parentsheldwellpaying,steadymanufacturingjobs.Now,moreareinserviceorhospitalityjobs
thatpaylessandarelesssecure.ManyofourimmigrantparentsfromMexicohavenotgone
beyondthefifthgrade.TheycametoChicagowithadesiretoimprovetheirlives.Their
daughterswillbethefirstgenerationtofinishhighschoolandattendcollege.InLittleVillage,
wherethemajorityofourstudentsreside,28.1percentofresidentshaveincomesbelow$15,000,
whichmeansapproximately22,000residentsarelivingatorbelowthepovertylevel.Median
familyincomeis$33,59349percentbelowthecitymedianincomeforwhitesand20percent
belowtheaverageforLatinos(Paral,Chicagocensusdata2010).

Forthelastsixyears,OurLadyofTepeyachasundergonearapidtransitiontowardsachieving
moderntechnologyintegrationbenchmarks.Studentswhograduatearenowbetterequippedthan
everbeenforhighereducationandthecontemporaryworkforce.Ourtechnologyprogramis
competitivewithmuchlargerschoolsintermsofequipment,capability,andcurriculum.Asthe
presentphaseofdevelopmentdrawstoaclose,imminentneedsandnewlongtermdirections
havemanifested.Thosedemandsexceedcurrentresources.InorderforOurLadyofTepeyacto
remainaleaderinpreparingyoungwomenforcollege,aseriesofissuesmustbeaddressed.
CommunityInvolvement
Communicationwithfamiliesandthewidercommunityisarelativelyuntappedcapability,andit
iswithinreachofpresenttechnology.Thesuccessfulimplementationofournewstudent
informationsystem(AdministratorsPlus)highlightstheneedforgrantingparentselectronic
accesstotheirchildrensattendanceandgrades.Rediker,ourSISvendor,offersamodulefor
suchanapplicationhowever,costsrequireustoinvestigateotheroptions.Arangeofpaidand
freeservicesforgrantingaccesstostudentgradeswillbeevaluatedforimplementationinthe
20142015academicyear.
Anotherareaofneedconcerningcommunicationsistheschoolwebsite.Itsattractivedesign
beliesaproblematicandbyzantinesourcecode,makingittooinflexibletoservetheschools
needforfrequentupdatesandinformativepages.Usinginhouseexpertise,weexpectto
renovatethewebsiteintimeforthe20132014academicyear.Thenewwebsitewillnot
innovateintermsofvisualdesign,butwillofferbettertransparencyandaccessibilitysothat
morepersonnelcanmakechangesandupdates.
OnesignificantcontributionofthisTechnologyPlantowardcommunityinvolvementisthe
creationofaTechnologyFocusGroup.Thisgroup,comprisingseveralfacultyandstaffas
wellasotherstakeholders,willassumeresponsibilityforpartsoftheTechnologyPlanthatare
conducivetocommunitydirection.SomeTFGinitiativesinclude:investigatingeffective
technologyintegrationinotherschoolsdevelopingaschoolwidestrategyfortechnology
learningandfacilitatingteachercollaboration.
CurriculumandInstruction
Integrationoftechnologyintostudentsdailyclassroomexperienceiscurrentlyunevenand
sporadic.SomestudentsmanagetogoformonthswithouttakingadvantageofOLTHS
computingresources.Someteachersareuncomfortableoperatingtechnologyequipmentbeyond
usingtheirlaptoptotakeattendanceandpostgrades.Moreover,powerfulinstructionaltools,
whilepresent,areunderutilized,includinginteractivewhiteboards,documentcamerasand
iPads.

TakestheplaceofDataCollectionandAnalysisintheOCSdocument.
AmajorcomponentofthisTechnologyPlanseekstoreviseteachingacrossthecurriculato
reflectuptodateexpectations,notonlyfortechnologyskillsbutforlearningingeneral.Toward
thatend,thefacultyhandbookwillbeupdatedtoincludecurrentstandards:alocallydeveloped
technologyskillinventorytheSixEssentialLearningsinaTechnologicalSocietytheISTE
NETSforteachersandforstudentsandtheTechnologyStandardsforIllinoisTeachers.
Ahandbookupdate,however,isnotsufficienttoeffectchangeinthecurriculum.The
TechnologyFocusGroupwillbetaskedwithdevelopingstrategiestofostertechnologylearning
andincentivizegreaterteachercollaborationandknowledgesharingonaspontaneousand
selfdrivenbasis.Thegoalintheseinitiativesistocreateconditionsforacommunityofpractice
totakeroot.Moreover,theTFGwillinvestigateeffectivepracticesfromotherschoolsand
generateareportonthefindings.
Asidefromthisambitiousproject,curriculumdevelopmentwillalsobeensuredthrough
administrativereviewknowledgesharingandreinforcementthroughweeklyfacultymeetings
andatleastoneinservicedayeachyeardedicatedtotechnologyintegration.
ProfessionalDevelopment
Notcoincidentally,someobjectivesinthisareaoftheTechnologyPlansharespacewiththose
addressingcurriculumandinstruction.Professionaldevelopmentisthelifebloodofreal
curricularandinstructionalchange.Bethatasitmay,acquiringfundstohireexperttrainers
remainsavariableinthebudget:itcanbepursued,butnotguaranteed.
Forthatreason,linchpinofthisprofessionaldevelopmentplanisatrainthetrainersapproach,
utilizingpresenttechnologyleaderstohelpdeveloptheskillsandknowledgeoftherestofthe
faculty.Thesetechnologyleaders,includingtheTechnologyDirector,willbetaskedwith
attendingconferencesorparticipatinginprofessionalorganizationsanddisseminatingthemost
salientlessonstothefacultyandstaffviameetings,inservicesandoneononesessions.School
effortstodevelopfacultyskillswillfollowguidelineslaidoutbytheTechnologyFocusGroup,
andchagesinskilllevelsmeasuredfromyeartoyear.
Thisstrategyisnotpursuedattheexpenseofseekingprofessionaltrainers,however.OLTHS
willinvestigateandapplyforgrantsearmarkedforprofessionaldevelopment,whichcanthenbe
fundedwithoutjeopardizingcriticallineitemsinexistingbudgets.
TechnologyDeploymentandSustainability
CurrentequipmentatOurLadyofTepeyacisbothremarkableandaging.OurApplecomputers
andnetworkhavegrantedstudentsnearlyunlimitedaccesstoacademicapplications,buttheir
abilitytodosowillbecomecompromisedwithoutroutinereplacementandmaintenance.
ThemostpressingneedisthatdemandforInternetusehasoutstrippedavailablebandwidth.
Withaverageclasssizesof17students,onlytwoclassroomscanconnectsimultaneously.More
usersoverburdenthenetworkandcauseinstability.Theseproblemcanbeamelioratedby

doublingourDSLlinesandusingaloadbalancingroutertoensuremaximumefficiency.
Second,thecurrentfleetof2007MacBooksstrugglesunderthedemandsofnewersoftware
applicationsaswellasthewearandtearofdailywork.Intheshortterm,wewishtoextendthe
lifeofourcurrentfleettoserveneedsfortwomoreacademicyears.Inthelongterm,wewill
collectthenecessaryinformationtojudgethebestwaytophaseoutourmobilelabforthebest
currenttechnologytoservetheschoolsmission.
Third,equipmentisnotmeetingtheadministrativeandteachingneedsoffacultyandstaff.Older
printers,projectorsandscannersshouldberetiredandreplaced.Theopensourceofficesuite
currentlyinstalledonallcomputersisnotsatisfactoryandshouldbereplacedwithMicrosoft
Office2010StandardEdition.Otherequipmentwillfillgapsasrequired:digitalcamerasand
scannersfortheRecruitmentOfficeMicrosoftOfficeProfessionalforourDevelopment
Directorandanadequatebackupstoreofcomputerspeakers,cables,adapters,andother
componentsthataresensitiveandeasilydamaged.
Fourth,theAppleiMacsthatconstituteourstationarycomputerlabhaveexceededtheir
maximumexpectedlifeofsixyears.Theycontinuetooperatewithoutseriousdefect.However,
theymaybeapproachingathresholdoflikelycomponentfailures.Fewcomputerslastaslongas
theseiMacshave.Whilereplacingthemisnotanimmediaterequirement,itisataskonthe
horizon,andthecostislistedhereasaresource.
