Remember the conditional clauses youve learned?

1) IF + PRESENT WILL (Possible Idea)

2) IF + PAST WOULD (Hypothetical idea)

Now take a look at the Garfield comic above:

With the 2 previously presented conditional clauses, were talking about the future or the present
time, but in the comic strip Garfield is talking about the past. To talk about a situation in the past that
could be happened differently, we use:
IF + PAST PERFECT WOULD HAVE + PARTICIPLE.
Examples:
a) If you had studied more, you certainly would have passed the SAT.
Here were talking about a situation in the past the listener didnt studied so s/he didnt pass the
SAT. The speaker is talking about something that was possible in the past but didnt happen.

Lets do the exercises above talking about things that were a possibility in the past but happened in a
different way using IF + PAST PERFECT WOULD HAVE + PARTICIPLE.
1) If Sarah ............................................... the homework, the teacher ............................................................... her
father. (do / neg- call)
2) If I . you were at the hospital, I ..
you. (know / visited)
3) It . difficult to find the underwear you wanted if you
... the correct size number. (neg- be / give)
4) Your wallet .. if you . it in
your pocket. (neg- be steal / keep)
5) You . sick this morning if you so
much candy yesterday. (neg- feel / neg- eat)
6) If we that new convertible, we
so many money troubles last year. (neg- get / neg- have)
7- .. that expensive red dress if you
.. it was so expensive? (int- get you / be)
8) If the teacher Steven was cheating during the test,..
