1. (30 points) A 12-lb uniform plate rotates about A in a vertical

plane under the combined effect of gravity and of the vertical force
P. Knowing that at the instant shown the plate has an angular
velocity of 20 rad/s and an angular acceleration of 30 rad/s2 both
counterclockwise,
(a) draw the free body and kinetic diagrams of the plate
(b) determine the force P [9.022 lb ],
(c) determine the components of the reaction at A. [Ay = 8.568 lb ,
Ax = 74.53 lb ]

2. (18 points) The rope ABC passes over a rod that is attached to the 5 kg
block. A constant vertical force of 10 N is applied to the end of the rope.
The coefficient of kinetic friction between the block and the surface that
supports it is 0.2.
(a) Draw the free body and kinetic diagrams of the block.
(b) If the block has a velocity of 3 m/s moving to the left when x = 2 m,
determine its acceleration in this position.
[NB = 61.01 N , ax = 0.4792 m/s2 ]

3. (26 points) The stationary wheel loader is lifting the load at B

vertically with acceleration a0 = 10 ft/s2.
(a) Draw the free body and kinetic diagrams of the wheel
loader. The center of mass of the wheel loader is at A.
(b) If the weight of the load B is 10,000 lb, the weight of the
wheel loader is 33,000 lb, l = 118 in., h = 90 in., and d = 27 in.,
determine the reactions on each of its four wheels if the wheel
loader is laterally symmetric. [FF = 15326 lb , FR = 7727 lb ]

4. (26 points) A child having a mass of 22 kg sits on a swing and is held in

the position shown by a second child. Neglecting the mass of the swing,
(a) Draw the free body and kinetic diagrams of the boy in scenarios (1),
(2), and (3) listed below:
(1) while the second child holds the swing with his arms
outstretched horizontally,
(2) immediately after the swing is released.
(3) when the swing is directly below A and has a velocity of 2.66
m/s. Assume rope AB is 2 meters long.
(b) Determine the tension in rope AB for scenarios (1), (2), and (3) listed above.
[T1 = 263.5 N, T2 = 176.8 N, T3 = 293.7 N]

For rotation about a fixed axis, the angular

velocity, , is related to linear velocity by

v = r
Normal acceleration,

an = 2r

at = r, where = constant angular

acceleration
For uniformly accelerated rotation:

=0 + t
= 0 + 0t + t2

Fx = m(aG)x

Fy = m(aG)y
