Assessment of English Learners

A continuous issue within science and math assessment within education is that they are
biased towards assuming the student are proficient in the english language. The reason
standardized testing or assessments are used is because it is supposed to be able to
represent and gauge where learning is taking place. The problem however, is that students
that are not proficient in English, such as recent immigrants, students that have been
classified with a language restriction or students that do not possess the necessary grade
appropriate english skills to be able to comprehend what is being asked of them during
assessments of their math and science knowledge. This leads to an environment that
adequate learning is not taking place and there for assessment is not an adequate
representation of what knowledge is being retained.
