Congress Projects: After Harvest
Congress has passed many laws on immigration, but why? These laws have created a
hostile environment for migrants to consider when contemplating joining the U.S. The movie
Harvest Empire has depicted life as a migrant and how the U.S. government handles migrant
issues. Consideration of the relationship between congress and immigration control has led me to
believe that congress would only proceed to create a hostile America for those whose only desire
is to journey to an opportunity-filled America.
It is evident that congress has passed many laws on immigration and migration reform
because they believe that America would grow as a whole if she only belonged to her people.
Congress passed these laws to make it exceedingly difficult to become joined to this country, in
order to reduce migrant and immigrant growth which is frowned upon in said establishment. The
message that congress is sending to migrants is that they are not welcome. The hostile message
created by these laws is meant to be discouraging to those on the outside and inside of this
country.
Harvest Empire is a documentary about the lives of those imported, deported, and
sometimes both, into and from this country. The documentary depicts the lives of laborers
working for U.S. industries, to whom their lives and successes reside in, only to earn table scraps
and injustice. The feeling received from the documentary was disgust from the fact that a nation,
who has a dream named after the opportunity it provides, could treat people with such

contradiction to what it stands for. Today, the effects that the subject matter of the documentary
has had on America is the immigration problem. America created the undocumented alien issue
because of the greed of growing industries. However, now to blame are the immigrants for: no
American jobs, higher taxes, and any other problem that can be pinned to them.
Congress is moving in a direction of harsher migrant and immigrant reform. The
evidence of that could not only be concluded from the document or a growing number of laws on
immigration, but from recent politicians who have campaign promises of outrageous ways to end
the immigration problem in America once and for all. These politicians are leading Republican
polls with a House and Senate full of Republicans. It is inferred that Republican politicians have
support from both the House and Senate in the issue of immigration reform.
