CMDA ATLANTA

OCTOBER 2015

Helping Africans
to help Africa
From Oct. 2-17, 2015 a team from Atlanta will be
serving at Galmi Hospital in Niger to train the
next generation of African surgeons.

is so important is that for new hospitals

to open their doors in Africa they are
required to have a general surgeon on
staff, therefore training these surgeons
to serve in Africa means that more
hospitals can open their doors and more
people can have access to critical medical
care.

PRAY FOR OUR TEAM

In order to effectively train these African

general surgeons it is critical
to have specialists to come, train and
equip these surgeons. To date, teams
from Atlanta have gone to serve at
hospital centers in Kenya and Ethiopia and
this year we are going to Galmi Hospital in
Niger. Niger is a prominently Muslim
country, but the impact that this hospital
is having medically & spiritually among the
people is tremendous. Our team consists
of Dr. Ken Rutledge - Urologist; Dr. David
Ballard - Gastroenterologist; Dr. Don
Shaffer - Oncologist; Carol Shaffer Pharmacist & Bill Reichart CMDA Atlanta
Director.

THE NEED IS CRITICAL

Did you know that at it's best there is

only 1 surgeon for every 250,000
Africans? And at the worst that ratio
reaches 1 surgeon per 2.5 million
people. Also were you aware that in
the country of Niger one out of every
10 children will not reach the age of
5! There is a healthcare crisis
throughout Africa and there is a need
to train African general surgeons on
the continent. That is why CMDA
Atlanta is strategically partnering and

working with the Pan-African

Academy of Christian Surgeons
(PAACS), a ministry that is training
African General Surgeons in Africa.
Why is this work important?
There are several reasons. One
reason is that training surgeons in
Africa helps to stem the tide of
brain drain if they train in the West.
Currently there are more Africans
practicing surgery in Chicago and
D.C than in all of Africa. The other
reason why this training program
