Outcome:

Exegetical Exercise (John 1:1-13)

Key Knowledge.
Background knowledge on the biblical world and the themes that
pervade the text from which this passage is taken

Key Skills.
Students will analyse and discuss the literary structure of the set text,
which includes:
Identifying the literary structure of the passage as a whole and literary
forms or techniques used by the author and explaining how and why
these have been used by the author.
Commenting on questions of context, historical setting and
meaning/significance of the literary text for the authors readership.

Essential Teacher
Background
The teacher will require an adequate background
knowledge of the scripture being studied and its
religious tradition. This includes an overall
knowledge of the Bible as a whole, particularly the
New Testament and how the Gospel of John fits
into it.
Furthermore, the teacher will have the essential
skills and the required experience in analysing a
literary passage and undertaking textual analysis,
namely a familiarisation with the exegetical
process.

Task
In groups your task is to draft and plan an
exegesis on a biblical passage.
As a class we will read the passage
Students will then divide into five groups
with each group covering a particular
section of this draft.
On conclusion in a real classroom scenario,
all groups would bring together each
section they have completed into what
would become the draft.

John 1: 1-13 (NRSV)

1In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with
God, and the Word was God. 2He was with God in the
beginning. 3Through him all things were made; without
him nothing was made that has been made. 4In him was
life, and that life was the light of all mankind. 5The light
shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not
overcome it.

6There was a man sent from God whose name was John.
7He came as a witness to testify concerning that light, so
that through him all might believe. 8He himself was not
the light; he came only as a witness to the light.

9The true light that gives light to everyone was coming


into the world. 10He was in the world, and though the
world was made through him, the world did not recognize
him. 11He came to that which was his own, but his own
