GeneralIntroduction:
AncientGreeksrecognizedthetransepidermalwatervaporlossinhumans,
butitwasnotyetunderstood.Duringthelate1500sand1600s,SantorioSanctoriusquantified
thechangesinbodymassduetoperspiration.Laterin1833,sweatglandswerediscoveredby
CzechphysiologistJohannesPurkinje(17871869).Histologyhastodowithepidermis,dermis,
andhypodermis.Epidermisisastratifiedsquamousepithelium,andithasepidermalridges.
Dermisisapapillarylayer,smallbloodvessels,lymphnodesandnerves,andfinecollagen/
elasticfibers.Thereisalsoareticularlayerwhichisavascularplexus,lymphandnerves,fine
collagenfibersandthickelasticfibers.Thehypodermis(subcutaneous)isamainyadiposetissue.

SpecificInformation:
Thetemperatureofthesurfaceoftheskinvarieswithenvironmental
temperature.Thetemperatureoftheskinsurfaceisoversuperficialveinsthanitisover
superficialarteries.Ingeneral,thetemperatureoftheskincoveringtheextremitiesislowerthan
thatoftheskincoveringtheheadandtorso.
Inacomfortableenvironment,thetemperatureofthe
skinsurfacevariesindifferentregionsofthebody.Thetemperatureoftheskinsurfaceofthe
trunkusuallyvariesbetween33.5and36.9C.(92.3and98.4F.).Thetemperatureoftheskin
surfaceisloweroversuperficialveinsthanitisoversuperficialarteries.Itislowerover
protrudingandmarkedlycurvedparts,suchasthenose,ears,fingersandtoes.Thetemperature
oftheskinishigherovermusclesthanoverboneortendons,overanactiveorganthanoverone
atrest.Theconclusionisthatmyskintemperaturetakesawhiletoreturntoitsregular
temperature.

SpecificInformationSkinsSensoryReception:
Psychologicalnervousness,thermalheat,and
exercisecanmakethesweatglandsactive.Eccrinesweatglandshaveamassofabout30to40
mg,andarefoundwithinthefirst3mmoftheskin,andappearalloverthebodysurface.Sweat
glandsgrowdownthroughthedermisandupholdsinahelicalpaththroughtheepidermisbefore
penetratingtheskinasasweatpore.Theydevelopwithinthestratumgerminationandbeginto
appearbeyond12to13weeksofgestation.Theyalsohavethisfunnellikeappearanceandan
innerdiameterofabout60to80.Theconclusionsisthattheupperportionsofmylegsandbacks
hadhighernumbersthanmyphalanges.
