VARIABLES
Variables are an important part of science
projects and experiments. What is a variable?
Basically, a variable is any factor that can be
controlled, changed, or measured in an experiment.
Scientific experiments have several types of
variables. The independent and dependent variables
are the ones usually plotted on a chart or graph.

1. INDEPENDENT VARIABLE
Factors set by researcher to be the

CAUSE; they are also referred as the

treatment and are usually manipulated,
modified, or selected to be the cause
of an observable behaviour

2. DEPENDENT VARIABLE
Are the factors that are the

EFFECTS of the treatment

introduced to the experiment. These
are observed and measured.

3. EXTRANEOUS
VARIABLES
Are factors that need to be kept the same

in all treatments or set-ups of the

experiment. These are controlled to
ensure that the observed response
(dependent variable) are affected only by
the independent variable.
