Psychogeography - Discovering the City
Wednesday 7th of October
5.30-7.30pm (talk starting 6.00pm)
The Glebe, Stoke
(35, Glebe St, Stoke-on-Trent, ST4 1HG)
What better way to discover a new world than to map it, to walk it, to discover it, to situate ourselves in it and in doing so become part of it. In
this talk I'll explore the practice of Psychogeography particularly in light of my recent work with the HEA on Psychogeography and Transition.
The Situationist leader Guy Debord described Psychogeography as the study of the precise laws and specific effects of the geographical
environment, consciously organized or not, on the emotions and behaviour of individuals." It has also been described as 'mappy weird stuff'.
I'll talk about the origins of the practice, authors and artists who used a derive technique, the Situationists, the impact of the environment on
individuals, the city, control, curiosity, transition and belongingness.
