PETERBOROUGH - Testimony at Robert McGregor's murder trial focused on blood evidence on Tuesday (March
17).
Defence lawyer Tyler Smith cross-examined Peterborough County OPP forensic constable Dan Hale, pointing out
that protective footwear wasn't worn when the crime scene was inspected by police after they found Joanne
MacKenzie's body in a wooded area behind her ex-boyfriend's home in July 2011.
He also brought to the jurors' attention that two partial foot impressions were found near the burial site, but neither
were compared to Mr. McGregor's shoes that were in evidence.
"They were lacking in detail," explain explains Const. Hall.
Mr. Smith also asked Const. Hale if he was ever given any shoes from Mr. McGregor's fianc Amanda Wells or if her
DNA was ever taken.
During his re-examination with Crown Midwood, Const. Hale tells jurors he never received information that would
have led him to collect DNA from Ms Wells.
"I didn't know what her role was," he explains.
Dave Sibley, a senior forensic/bloodstain pattern analyst and an expert forensic identification witness with the OPP,
also took the stand on Tuesday.
Mr. Sibley used Luminol, a chemical investigators to detect trace amounts of blood left at crime scenes, as it reacts
with iron found in hemoglobin.
He tells jurors that he was directed to spray three areas with Luminol, including where police found a pair of sandals,
glasses, and a pair of gardening gloves.
"We had a positive reaction," Mr. Sibley explains when talking about where the sandals were found.
He added that the area covered by was approximately three feet by five feet and it was classified as a pooling
pattern.
At the end of the day, jurors were hearing from Doctor Trevor Claxton, from the Center of Forensic Science.
The trial continues on Wednesday (March 18).
