LESSON PLAN

Lesson: History (Jack Simpson & his donkey)

Lesson Objectives:
Clear understanding of the role John/Jack Simpson and his donkey played.
Understanding of the ANZAC spirit which in exceptionally well displayed in this
story.
Professional Standards: 2.6, 3.1, 3.2, 3.3, 3.4, 3.5, 4.1, 4.2, 4.5,
Material Required:

Pen/pencil,

w/s

Ipad

Books.

Procedures:
IntroductionGauge students prior knowledge. Ask for examples of what they feel may be good
examples of the ANZAC spirit (e.g. Bravery, mateship, loyalty, humility, companionship).
Do they feel that they represent the ANZAC spirit?
PresentationRead through the w/s Simpson and His Donkey. Get various students to read out
aloud. Students are to highlight important sentences (we will discuss which
sentences are important and why). Question how does the story make them feel?
What character traits do they feel Simpson displays fill in these words/adjectives on
the Simpson and his Donkey w/s. As a class answer questions 1, 2, 3. 4 & 5 students
to complete individually.
Using Ipads and w/s students are to work in pairs and research John Simpson. Students
are to complete the info on Walker books / Johns Simpson w/s.

Early finishes to begin on a basic timeline for John Simpson, stating the following (birth date,
when he left England, date he was accepted into the army, date he landed in Galipolli.

Evaluation/Assessment Ask various groups for feedback on the information they


have found.

Reflection: I was very happy with this lesson. The children were engaged and participated
well. The end result was a clear view on who Simpson was & what he and his donkey
achieved. This activity also reiterated and reinforced those character traits that make a true
ANZAC.
