Art 133 PM
Unit Paper #2
The first paragraph of this paper will address the ideas that were presented in the readings
and studios during a course I am enrolled in, titled art 133.Throughout the activities the big idea
being addressed was about conservation and ecology. According to Hurwitz and Day (2007),
visual culture in art education has made a huge impact on students. Visual artwork has helped
students develop a deeper understanding of how students lives and culture is heavily influenced
by the environment around them. By gaining this deeper understanding, students are able to
create art that has important emphasis on how they perceive the world. In the exploring earth
studio, students were supposed to choose a topic they felt strongly about. Students then recreated
a printed picture with a painting on top of how the image should look. Students were able to
demonstrate how they viewed the world and the disasters taken place. Creating artwork about the
environment around students and exploring visual culture, is a great way to show a deeper
understanding of issues occurring and to demonstrate how strongly artist feel about them.
The second paragraph of this paper will discuss how I will apply the information learned
throughout this unit when I have my own classroom. I realized how important it is for students to
use their own views of environment to create artwork that reflects world issues and ones own
identity. Visual artwork reaches a deeper understanding of what individuals perceive the world
to be. When I become a teacher, I plan on using the topic of conservation and ecology to allow
students to express their feelings and open their eyes to the visual art and culture in their
everyday lives.
