Lesson: Geography Where did


Indigenous
Australians Live?
Lesson Objectives:
General understanding of the areas in which the indigenous
people lived before Europeans arrived, reason for moving around,
the highest populated area and the reason for this .

Material Required:

Pen/pencil,
w/s

Books.
Time Required: 1 Hr
Procedures:
IntroductionGauge students prior knowledge by asking questions
Q1) Why do we live where we do Q2) Where do they think Indigenous
Australians lived before Europeans arrived (all in one
group/scattered/inland/coast etc Q3) Give a reason for your answer.

PresentationRead through the w/s 'Where Indigenous Australians Live?'(sources from


www.teachthisworksheet). Students to track with me while reading. Ask
various students to read a sentence (clarify information regularly). Once
reading is complete discuss the information as a class (pull a stick) to get
answers.
Once discussion is complete students are to use the information on the
w/s to answer the 3 questions at the bottom of the page.
As a class read through w/s - 'How does this compare to where we live
today?' Children to track along while reading and pull a stick to ask
various students to read aloud. Discuss and then children are to complete
the table stating similarities and differences.

Evaluation/Assessment

Feedback on both w/s. Discuss the


similarities and differences - ask for reasons for answers.

Reflection:

Interesting lesson content which had children engaged


in discussion and giving opinions on why Indigenous people lived where

they did. Discussions on food types and how our food differs and why
(European influence etc).
