SELF ASSESSMENT

When thinking about a healthy school community, I think of involvement from not only
the students but also the staff, such as the administrators and teachers. One of the main
aspects I think about when seeing a healthy school is to involve the family and
community. If everyone as a whole were to come together and join this development, the
students, teachers, and families can feel like a community as well as feel comfortable
with one another.
Mesa High School is located in Mesa and according to the self-assessment it looks like
they have a connection to a healthy school community. For the first part of the
assessment, in the health and safety section, Mesa High School provides all of the
questions except for giving help for those who want to quit smoking (McConnell, Corbin,
Corbin, & Farrar, 2014, pp. 388). In the second part of the assessment that deals with the
nutrition and physical activity services, Mesa scored a ten out of twelve with the only
question that wasnt a yes relating to health education (McConnell, Corbin, Corbin, &
Farrar, 2014, pp. 388). Courtney James helped out with the assessment for part three.
She answered all of the questions for the school engagement and responded with yes for
all of them. She mentioned that she feels that Mesa is helping her to become a healthier
person. Courtney is involved in the advanced fitness class, which also happens to be a
club for the school, and is helping her learn to eat right and stay active (personal
communication, September 23, 2015).
