Cross-sections are assumed to be at least class 3 in all exercises!

1. a) Verify the lower chord of the truss shown below given the nodal loads FEd = 350 kN!
The chord is made of an I section with bolted connection on both ends. Dimensions of the
section are also shown below. The connections are designed with M16 8.8 bolts. The structure
is made of S235 grade steel.

1 b) Determine the flexural buckling resistance of the chord member under compression in
the truss from exercise 1 a)! All chord members are made of the same I sections as the
lower chord in exercise 1 a). The z axis is in the plane of the truss! All nodes of the chord
under compression have lateral supports. The structure is made of S235 grade steel.

buckling around the y axis: b curve
buckling around the z axis: c curve
Buckling coefficients:

- buckling in the plane of the truss: 0.9

- buckling out of the plane of the truss: 1.0

2. Determine the flexural buckling resistance of the structure shown below assuming that the
column is rotated in the more advantageous position (i.e. the selected configuration shall
maximize flexural buckling resistance)! Boundary conditions are shown in the figure below.
The column is made of a hot rolled I section with the given area and moments of inertia. The
material of the column is S275 grade steel.

3. The I beam in the figure below is subjected to qEd = 170 kN/m distributed load. Verify the
resistance of the beam at its appropriate sections for the acting internal forces assuming plastic
behavior!
The cross-section is a welded class 1 section made of S275 grade steel.
