9th Grade English Language Arts Syllabus

Class overview:
Throughout the year we will be using Glencoe Literature The Readers Choice address many
types of literature.
Short Story
Nonfiction
Poetry
Drama
Epic and Myth
Fiction
We will analyze these text to find these literary elements.
Plot and Setting
o Sequence of Events
Plot
Conflict
o Time and Place
Characters
Theme
o Stated Theme
o Implied Theme
Point of View
o Narrator
o First Person
o Third Person
Language Choices
o Voice
o Tone
We will also read selected novels to identify and analyze these same literary elements.
Behavior Policy:
If a student causes a disruption to the learning environment they will receive a
consequence. Typically they will be given correctional steps, but I reserve the right to take any
actions I feel necessary to extinguish any learning distractions.
Step 1: Verbal warning
Step 2: 1 on 1
Step 3: Office referral
Step 4: Any and all additional distractions on the same day (not class) will result in another
office referral.

Late Work & Make-Up Work Policy:


If a student is absent they have the same number of days that there absence lasted to turn in
make-up work. One day absent = one day to turn in work. Everyday an assignment is late it
will be marked down by 10%. The most a late assignment will be marked down is 50%.
