Middle School Social Studies Syllabus

Class overview:
Throughout the year we will be using World History Journey Across Time, primary documents,
and other resources to study the creation of human civilizations all the way to the modern
era. Topics will include:
Early Civilizations
o Mesopotamia
o Nile river valley
The Ancient World
o Ancient Greece
o Early India
o Early China
New Empires and New Faiths
o Roman Empire
o Rise of Christianity
o Islamic Civilizations
The Middle Ages
o Medieval Europe
o Medieval Japan
o Medieval Africa
A Changing World
o The Americas
o The Renaissance and Reformations
o Then Enlightenment
Modern Times
o Industry and Nationalism
o Imperialism and World War I
o World War II and the Cold War
o Challenges for the modern world

Behavior Policy:
If a student causes a disruption to the learning environment they will receive a
consequence. Typically they will be given correctional steps, but I reserve the right to take any
actions I feel necessary to extinguish any learning distractions.
Step 1: Verbal warning
Step 2: 1 on 1
Step 3: Office referral
Step 4: Any and all additional distractions on the same day (not class) will result in another
office referral.

Late Work & Make-Up Work Policy:


If a student is absent they have the same number of days that there absence lasted to turn in
make-up work. One day absent = one day to turn in work. Everyday an assignment is late it
will be marked down by 10%. The most a late assignment will be marked down is 50%.
