Core Competency 4 Engage diversity and difference in practice.
Practice Behavior 4.1
Recognize the extent to which a cultures structures and values may oppress, marginalize, alienate, or create or enhance privilege and power. We
live in a diverse world it is important to be aware
of others cultural beliefs and structures. I have not yet seen a cultures structure and values oppress or marginalize a family nor have I seen it create privilege. I think that families that are culturally different then the average American family use their cultural values and structures to their advantages. They apply their culture in the home and make accommodations to survive outside of their home.
Practice Behavior 4.2
Gain sufficient self-awareness to eliminate the influence of personal biases and values in working with diverse groups. It is important for a Social Worker to be aware of the client they are about to meet with and be prepared and educated on the clients culture. A family that I have worked with allows their child to take their own medications and the family is known to share medications. On the outside the family did not look different than mine, but I had to control my beliefs and opinions when meeting with the family since I did not agree with their lifestyle choices.
Practice Behavior 4.3
Recognize and communicate their understanding of the importance of difference in shaping life experiences. It is important to help encourage clients to open up and see the opportunities that they have. I meet with a student that had a high rate of being absent. When meeting with her to tell her the options that would be open to her if she came to school seemed to peek her interest.
Practice Behavior 4.4
View themselves as learners and engage those with whom they work as informants. It is important to learn from those we work with. I ask many questions to m supervisors and I learn a lot more when I am willing to ask. I attend many different meetings and workshops to help better myself. Coming Oct. 9th I get to patriciate in a live to lead conference through my internship and I'm excited to learn how to lead and be a great leader and share what I learn with my colleagues.
