Video Broadcasting Grant Proposal

Purpose:
This proposal is designed to help schools plan for the integration of new video
broadcasting equipment into the media program to produce a school
news/announcement program through Safari Montage. The school broadcast is a
perfect platform for showcasing student projects and should include
presentations created by students throughout the school. This plan should be a
collaborative effort between the school's administration, the media specialist, and
other faculty and staff.
Student Benefit:
Broadcasting is an activity that builds essential 21st Century skills in our students.
In working with the tools and resources required for broadcasting, students
strengthen communication skills through team collaboration, heighten creativity
through brainstorming, and develop problem solving and time management skills
through organizing and creating the show. Participation in broadcasting benefits
students in many ways and provides experience and skills needed to transition
more easily into the workplace.
Grant Requirements:
Submission of this proposal requires those involved to:
attend mandatory training sessions on the utilization of the equipment and
the management of a school news broadcast;
commit to producing a news broadcast at their school.
Collaborate with other peers on video broadcasting and best practices.
Equipment Options:
Depending on the goals and needs of the school, applicants may apply to receive
one of the two systems shown below. System 1 is very straightforward and easy
to use. System 2 is more advanced and will require more time and commitment
to learn to use the equipment and software provided. Both systems will require
the use of a school computer (not provided) to take advantage of some of the
features of the system.

4. Please describe your experience with video broadcasting. Include participation in video broadcasting
class. (Lack of experience will not affect your acceptance.)

We have produced a basic live morning broadcast for the past 2 years. I have experience
selecting a staff/assigning roles, writing a script, taping a live show using a teleprompter
and a camera, using the switcher box, and uploading our signage weekly. Ms. Newkirk
and I attended the first Producing a Video Broadcast with Students course in order to learn
more about making our broadcast more substantial and learning about editing tools.

5. How do you plan to manage and utilize the equipment provided in this grant?

We would like to begin by producing a live morning news broadcast on

Monday-Thursday and a more in-depth and substantial broadcast on Fridays. In our
Friday broadcasts, we want to incorporate more segments to make the broadcast more
robust. We also want to move toward using the equipment to develop 21st century skills
with our students. We want to eventually move toward a point where our show is student
driven and we act as facilitators. In addition to using the equipment to produce the news,
I would like to use it in the Media Center with students to design projects, showcase
creativity, and incorporate the equipment into my media lessons where appropriate.

6. How will students be involved in utilizing these resources?

I visualize students first using the resources to produce a live morning news broadcast.
However, I would like them to learn how to incorporate segments using the web 2.0 tools
and the resources that were presented in the Broadcasting Course that we attended. I
would like the students to learn to use editing tools to make the news more substantial. I
also want them to use the iPad in addition to the video camera to produce the segments for
the news. Having the students travel to classrooms and school events will allow us to
showcase as many students as possible. When classrooms and students are featured on
the broadcast, more classrooms are likely to buy into the ideas of watching the morning
broadcast. A robust morning news show has the potential to be a great communication
tool; promote school spirit; spotlight projects and activities; and offer
students/teachers/staff/administrators a sense of connectedness. Additionally, I can use
the resources, equipment and tools to collaborate with teachers to promote digital
citizenship and the incorporation of 21st digital learning skills. We can achieve this through
project-based learning and the integration of these digital resources into our curriculum.

7. The following signatures indicate our commitment to implementing the plans described above and
utilizing the equipment provided to promote student learning at our school. (Space for 4 signatures is
provided, but all are not required)
