Last Saturday, Superman happened to be shopping for a new cape at Manhattan Mall,
located on the corner of 6th Ave. and 33rd Street when he saw a fire truck rushing through the
streets and heard that a kitty was trapped in a burning house on 12th Avenue and 41st Street.

1. Assuming that the Avenue number
represents the x-coordinate, and the
Street number represents the y-
coordinate, and that all the blocks in
Manhattan are the same size, plot the
location of Superman and the kitty on the
following graph. Label your axes.
2. a) Assuming the fire truck also starts at
Superman’s location, find the distance the
firemen have to travel to get to the scene
of the fire. Remember that the fire truck
cannot go through buildings. b) Find the
distance Superman has to travel if he flies
to the scene directly from his current
location.

3. Assume that all the blocks in Manhattan are 100 meters in length and width. Both Superman
and the fire truck travel at a rate of 200 meters per minute. The house will burn down in 6
minutes. Will both, neither or only one of the rescue parties reach the kitty before it’s too late?
