VOICES FOR CEREBRAL PALSY a/k/a Samanthas Purpose is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit charitable organization. The mission of Voices for
Cerebral Palsy is to increase awareness & understanding of Cerebral Palsy, to bring families, community members & children of all abilities
together; while giving back to the Cerebral Palsy community. The net proceeds of this event will be used to fund grants to individuals or
organizations that strengthen, support & nurture individuals with Cerebral Palsy.

The first time was such a great success and so much fun, that we are doing it again. The Voices for
Cerebral Palsy Bows & Bowties 5k A Community Tied Together for CP, will take place on Sunday,
February 28, 2016. The 5K is open to runners and walkers. It is once again Family-Friendly, KidFriendly and fully accessible. The 5k will start at Coral Reef Park and wind through the beautiful Village
of Palmetto Bay. This event is being professionally timed and managed by Split Second Timing. The
course is being certified by USATF (USA Track and Field) and we are using Active.com to promote and
handle all event registration.
This event will serve as the kick-off of Cerebral Palsy Awareness Month, which takes place in March,
and is now officially recognized in the State of Florida; thanks to Commissioner Juan C. Zapata, State
Representative Eric Fresen and Senator Raul Garcia.
This event is the ONLY fundraiser that Voices for Cerebral Palsy organizes throughout the year. In
order to ensure the success of this very important fundraiser, we are seeking Sponsors to help defray
the costs associated with the event, so that all funds raised can go directly toward the grants we
provide to individuals with Cerebral Palsy and to established organizations (such as special need
schools, therapy centers and/or summer camp programs) that strengthen, support & nurture
individuals with Cerebral Palsy.
Your participation as a Sponsor shows the community that you and/or your company also understand
how important it is that to bring attention to the individuals, both young and old, in our community
that have been diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy. We are hopeful that our efforts will promote
compassion towards people that have Cerebral Palsy and change the attitudes of the community.
Demographics of the Event:
! In 2015, we were expecting 250 participants. To our surprise we had more than five hundred
(500) participants from the South Florida area. We anticipate and are preparing for 750 race
participants at the 2016 event.
! The participants were from the tri-county area of South Florida.
! We had so many family teams that had their extended family, friends and business associates
come out to support their family member with Cerebral Palsy. We had several schools, therapy
centers, government agencies and other organizations come out to support the event.
! The diversity and socio-economic status of those in attendance will once again be vast,
because CP does not discriminate based upon income, race, ethnicity, religion, etc.

LET US INTRODUCE YOU TO OUR EVENT AMBASSADORManuel Antonio (MAC)

Manuel Antonio III, better known as MAC, was born on November 10th, 2010
at 32 weeks and 1 day of gestation. Being our first child and unaware of what
this meant, when Zulys water broke that morning, I remember scrambling to
get the car seat out of the box and installed in the car thinking he was coming
home in the next day or so. It only took another 5 weeks and 5 days in the
NICU, for MAC to finally come home.
When MAC was 8 months old we realized that he was not performing the
regular physical activities a baby his age would perform. He could not roll
over, sit up let alone crawl or reach out for things. Due to the fact that we were
constantly told Give him time, he doesnt need anything else, we took it for
what it was. Still not convinced, we contacted Early Steps and they
recommended we start physical therapy to speed up his development. After a
few months of therapy, he began to roll, then he would not topple over when
sat up; we figured, hes doing great. In early 2012, his therapist at the time,
Melissa, to whom we are forever indebted, recommended that we go see a neurologist because although he
had progressed, he was not progressing at the rate she was comfortable with.
It was January 18th when MAC had his MRI. Two days later we heard what no parent wants to hear, MAC was
diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy (CP), specifically a PVL. We were told that MAC was going to have a major issue
walking and that there was a chance he would not. This bomb was dropped on us with what felt to be a greater
force than that of Nagasaki and Hiroshima combined. What we rapidly learned is that our boy is not a regular
boy. He has a heart of gold, a personality that will charms all those he encounters and is filled with a lot of true
love and he has been surrounded by angels. The first angel he encountered was Michelle CoffeyGarcia. Michelle was introduced to us through a mutual friend and has made a greater impact in our lives than I
think she knows. Michelle introduced us to John and Claudia Orrett at Blossoms Therapy Center during the
launch of their publication, Unique Me magazine, and from the first moment welcomed MAC and our family with
open arms.
In November 2012, MAC was blessed to receive his first grant from Samanthas Purpose, as well as contributions
from many friends, family and even strangers which allowed him to participate in his first 3-week intensive
therapy program at Blossoms Therapy Center. MAC showed incredible progress from the team of spectacular
therapists there, but he also won the hearts of many. To date, MAC has had a special surgery called SDR,
received another grant from SP to participate in another intensive program at Blossoms and receives his regular
therapy at Blossoms. He attends school daily and his motor skills have shown immense improvement. He has
continued to progress and never plateau. There is no question that the therapy MAC receives at Blossoms is
the reason this has happened and that our son has reached the levels he has. We started out being told he may
never walk, to him using a walker and knowing that he may walk on his own in the next year or two. Many would
consider it a miracle, and I do, but this miracle could not have occurred without the intervention of the angels
that have touched his life, from Samanthas Purpose to Blossoms. His journey is life long, but we all have one.
This is his. I have no doubt that he will be able to live a physically independent and interactive life solely
because of the contributions of these organizations and the phenomenal group of individuals. For that, we are
ever grateful and humbled.

It is stories like MACs that drive the volunteers of Samanthas Purpose to continue to do what we do. However,
without your financial support miracles like these are not possible. We sincerely ask that you consider
supporting the mission of Samanthas Purpose by sponsoring this event. Your financial contribution goes directly
to the children and helps to make more miracles possible.

HOW DID THE FUNDS RAISED MAKE A DIFFERENCE?

The 2015 Run, Walk & Stroll for CP event was a greater success than anticipated. We had set a goal of
$15,000.00 and exceeded it. After collecting all the sponsorships, registration fees and donations we are
excited to share that net proceeds were used as follows:

$6,300 was given back to the Family Teams that registered and worked tirelessly to promote and
raise funds. The money that was given back to the Family Teams was used to cover the cost of
summer camp tuition, purchase a computer to help a young girl with Cerebral Palsy achieve
educational goals, cover a portion of the cost of therapy services, went towards the cost of special
needs equipment, and made it possible for a young boy with Cerebral Palsy go to Walt Disney
World for the first time.
$1,100 was used to promote Cerebral Palsy Awareness Month through the creation and distribution
of a Press Release and the design and printing of a special #JOINTHEMOVEMENT Cerebral Palsy
Awareness t-shirt. These t-shirts were created so that they can be used year after year.
Two (2) grants were provided to House of Healing, which funded art/music therapy for two (2)
children with Cerebral Palsy.
$2,500 was donated to our Event Ambassador (MAC) so that he could participate in an intensive
therapy program for 3 weeks following his SDR surgery at St. Louis Childrens Hospital.
$1,000 was donated to IAM Able Fitness to fund therapy sessions for adults with Cerebral Palsy.
A donation to ALPER JCC Summer Camp Program for individuals with Special Needs was made and
is being used specifically for a child with Cerebral Palsy.
A donation to the organization Kyan Kause made it possible for children with Special Needs to
receive swimming lessons over the summer.
$500 was donated to the Special Olympics and their programs.
We provided a grant to a 12-year-old girl with Cerebral Palsy through the organization CCDH. This
grant made it possible for her grandmother to purchase a wheelchair for the child.
A donation/event sponsorship to the X-Family Foundation Bowl-a-thon was used to sponsor the cost
of children with Cerebral Palsy participating in this fun event.
$450 was donated to the I Am Chloe Adaptive Cross Fit Event for children/individuals with Special
Needs and Cerebral Palsy.
Monies were donated to a Conductive Education program on behalf of a little girl with Cerebral
Palsy, so that she could attend their special 8-week program in Orlando, Florida.
Monies were set aside for the 2016 event.

WHAT IS CEREBRAL PALSY?

Cerebral Palsy also known as CP is a group of disorders that affect a persons ability to move, keep balance
and posture. Cerebral means having to do with the brain. Palsy means weakness or problems with using the
muscles. Cerebral Palsy is caused by abnormal brain development or damage to the developing brain that
affects a persons ability to control his/her muscles. The brain damage that leads to Cerebral Palsy can happen
before birth, during birth, or during the first years of a childs life while the brain is still developing. The specific
cause of most cases of Cerebral Palsy is unknown. Cerebral Palsy is the most common motor disability in
children. It is the second most common disability in children, after Autism. According to the United States
Centers for Disease Control, 1 in 323 children have Cerebral Palsy.
CP is a permanent physical condition. It can be as mild as just a weakness in one hand to complete lack of
movement. A majority of the time Cerebral Palsy affects a persons ability to walk, communicate, eat, write, or
dress themselves. Cerebral Palsy is not progressive, is not a disease and is not contagious. Individuals with
Cerebral Palsy are also very likely to have intellectual disabilities, vision impairments, suffer hearing loss, require
assistance with activities of daily living, experience constant pain and suffer from seizures.

There are four main types of Cerebral Palsy:

! Spastic - People with spastic CP have increased muscle tone. This means their muscles are stiff and, as a
result, their movements can appear awkward.
! Dyskinetic - People with dyskinetic CP cannot control the movement of their hands, arms, feet, and legs,
making it difficult to sit and walk. Their movements can be slow and writhing or rapid and jerky.
! Ataxic - People with ataxic CP have problems with balance and coordination. They might be unsteady
when they walk.
! Mixed - Some people have symptoms of more than one type of CP. The most common type of mixed
CP is spastic-dyskinetic CP.
There is no single best treatment for children with CP. After a CP diagnosis is made, a team of health
professionals works with the child and family to develop a plan to help the child reach his or her full potential.
Common treatments include medicines, surgery, braces (AFO), and/or Physical, occupational and speech
therapy.
