Dibels & TRC

Dibels
Dibels is a series of 60 second tests that

assess students phonemic awareness

and phonological skills

FSF first sound fluency (K)

PSF phoneme segmentation fluency (K & 1)
LNF letter naming fluency (K & 1)
NWF nonsense word fluency (K & 1)
DORF Dibels oral reading fluency (1)

FSF
This tests students ability to isolate the

first sound of a word

Ex: Teacher says fox : student says f

-this

helps students hear isolated sounds in a

word and helps them with writing (sound
spelling)

Words do get more complex as year

progresses and students have to isolate
first sounds from a blend
Ex:

Teacher says blend : student says b

PSF
This test assesses students ability to

hear all the sounds within a word

This helps with sounding out

words/reading and sound spelling/writing

Ex: Teacher says cat: student says c-a-t

Harder examples include blends and force
students to hear each and every sound

Ex:

Teacher says brick: student says b-r-i-ck

Common error: student says br-i-ck

LNF
Letter naming fluency

The purpose of this assessment is to see how

many letters students can identify quickly!
The idea is to identify as many letters as possible
in 60 seconds!
This is not in alphabetical order, but rather a line
of random letters
Ex: L m t c v B w E r x f k o Q l H b D G j u y
The idea is to test fluency the letters should
become second nature so students dont have to
think about the letters

NWF
Nonsense word fluency is designed to test

a students ability to not only say each

sound within a word, but blend sounds
together

2 possible scores:
Each

sound (Ex: student reads waf as w-a-f

Whole word read (Ex: student reads waf as waf

Whole word read does score more points than

sound by sound

DORF
The DORF assessment is a 60 second test

where students will read a grade-level

appropriate passage.
Focus

= fluency

Students will be assessed on # of words per

minute
Students will be assessed on # of accurate
words per minute
Students will be asked to retell what they can
from what they read
