Lesson Description
Facts vs. Opinions Lesson by Vanessa Montgomery
On April 15, 2015 I presented a lesson to a student at High Tech Middle
School in Point Loma, who has been struggling with understanding the
difference between facts and opinions in his English class. His general
education teacher reached out to me and asked if I could work with him oneon-one and assist him by modifying his work. His teacher was teaching a
lesson to her seventh grade English class on persuasive essay writing. She was
concerned, based upon prior knowledge from previous lessons that this
particular student would struggle with the first portion of the lesson. Due to
this reasoning she and I both believed it would be best if I provided him with
one-on-one instruction.
The teacher and I worked together to create a modified lesson that
would cater to this students reading level, his ADHD diagnosis, as well as his
ability to understand content. While doing this, I found the same article that
the class was working on and was able to change the reading level to a third
grade level, which is the level he is currently on. I made sure there was extra
time provided in the lesson for frequent brain breaks, for this student to get
water and so that he could move around to be able to refocus throughout
the lesson. Lastly, the teacher and I created a way for him to read actively by
looking back into the text to answer questions. I also directed the student to
read the article multiple times, in order to help him process the information
before answering the follow up questions.
