 What ‘s mass media ?
• The Mass Media are organized systems of
production, dissemination and reception of
information. These systems are managed by
companies specializing in mass
communication. Companies can be private,
public or state.

• The Television
• The Internet
 History of the mass media
• The earliest printed mass-medium, probably
European popular prints, dates back to 1400.
These were produced in huge numbers but just a
few survive nowadays.
• Johannes Gutenberg printed the first book on a
printing press with movable type in 1453. This
invention transformed the way the world
received printed materials, although books
remained too expensive really to be called a
mass-medium for at least a century after that.
 The impact on society
• Mass media plays a crucial role in forming and
reflecting the public opinion, connecting the
world to individuals and reproducing the self-
image of society.
• The impact of the mass media relates not
merely to the way newsworthy events are
perceived, but also to a multitude of cultural
influences that operate through the media
