Talking with your Legislator


Preparation

Determine your goal and list the points you wish to make in the course of a
personal visit or a telephone conversation.

Know the number of the appropriate bill, dates of introduction and any
subsequent amended versions.

Be familiar with the provisions of the bill and your rational for support or
opposition.

Secure name and specific staff person to be contacted.

Suggestions for Conversation

State your name, position you hold, school/organization you represent.

Ask to speak to legislative aide (if calling about bill).

Briefly, express your questions or your views on the issue.

Do not argue. Do not antagonize.

Determine position held by legislator in the bill or issue, if possible.


If it is favorable, express appreciation.

Secure the name of the staff person responding to your call.


Thank the staff for their assistance.

Follow-Up
Send letter to legislator acknowledging your call to the office and assistance
given by staff.
