Nussbaum believes that cosmopolitan orientation is more important than a politics of

nationalism for one can learn more about oneself through cosmopolitan education. An education
under the influence of patriotism too often emphasizes on an idea that ones own preferences and
ways are neutral and natural. In Nussbaums view, cosmopolitan education allows one to learn
more about people from other parts of the world. This enables one to look at oneself through the
lens of the other, thus realize that local practices are not always essential nor practiced
throughout the world, and that there are perhaps better alternatives.
Besides, cosmopolitan education allows better solutions to global issues. All countries
interdependent on one another especially in terms of problems such as pollution and food supply.
To obtain better solutions for these issues, Nussbaum stated that knowledge on cultures and
people of other countries is essential in order to respect traditions and commitments of others
while engaging in global dialogue for the benefit of the world in lieu of just the nation as
promoted in patriotism. This vital knowledge and the realization that everyone has to share this
world regardless of ones country can be provided through cosmopolitan education.
Furthermore, Nussbaum believes that cosmopolitan education makes people recognize
moral obligations to the entire world that would otherwise go unnoticed. According to
Nussbaum, cosmopolitan education teaches one to look past the comfort zone confined by
politics of nationalism and contribute to the world by considering right of other human beings
to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness when making political and economic choices.
Also, cosmopolitan orientation is consistent and coherent with the idea of equality among
differences in race, gender, class et cetera. While patriotism urges all to look past distinctions for
unity, it is an irony that it, at the same time, hinders unity across different nations. Therefore,

Nussbaum thinks that only cosmopolitan education represents the idea of unity across all
barriers.
