Lotte Reiniger was a German film director who pioneered the art of silhouette animation. She released her first feature-length silhouette film 10 years before Walt Disney's Snow White. Over her career, Reiniger made over 40 films using her invention of silhouette animation, cutting out around 100,000 silhouettes by hand and using different colored lights to create various moods. She was inspired to pursue animation after attending a lecture on its possibilities and eventually joined an acting group where she began creating silhouette portraits and title cards, leading to her pioneering work in the new art of silhouette films.

Reiniger made over 40 films over her career,
all using her invention. She cut out around 100,000 silhouettes by hand. She used different colour lights to create different moods.
As a teenager, Reiniger fell in love with cinema, first
with the films of Georges Mlis for their special effects. Then the films of the actor and director Paul Wegener. In 1915, she attended a lecture by Wegener that focused on the fantastic possibilities of animation. Eventually she convinced her parents to allow her to enrol in the acting group that Wegener belonged to, the Theatre of Max Reinhardt. She started making silhouette portraits of the various actors around her, and soon she was making elaborate title cards for Wegener's films, many of which featured her silhouettes.
