ABSTRACT

One of the most important environmental factors that significantly affect the
mechanical properties of asphalt mixtures is temperature. Temperature, not only affects the
structural capacity of the pavement but also causes a lot of distresses in pavements, the major
ones being Rutting, Fatigue cracking and Low temperature cracking. Rutting may cause
hydroplaning and non-uniform tire pavement contact stresses, which will further lead to other
diseases and affect driving safety. Therefore, temperature is a significant factor that affects
the performance and life span of a pavement. After the introduction of the Superpave method
of approach to mix design that proposes a two-number system intended to insure that the
proper asphalt binder is used to resist pavement rutting in hot temperatures and to resist
cracking in cold temperatures, accurate measurement of temperatures became important.
Thus, in this paper some of the methods for prediction of pavement temperature were
included and also identification of the best method for predicting pavement temperature was
done. It also indicates the procedure for reducing pavement temperature using different
methods and procedure and the efficiency of each method.
