This document outlines a rubric for evaluating narrative summaries in 4 levels from advanced to below basic. An advanced summary includes the main character(s), setting, problem, events, and resolution as well as evidence to support the theme. A proficient summary includes most of the narrative elements and identifies the theme, while a basic summary includes some elements and may miss the theme. A below basic summary includes few correct elements, misidentifies elements, and does not convey the theme.
