    Unit 3 at CSTPS Chandrapur tripped on June 27, 2008 at 14:58 hrs due to a damaged main oil pump gear coupling. The turbine tripped mechanically with an abnormal sound from the front pedestal. Maintenance inspected the pedestal and found the main oil pump gear coupling damaged. They replaced the coupling. The unit was resynchronized on June 28, 2008 at 13:41 hrs after restoration work. Recommendations included rechecking the coupling and checking HP/MOP alignment during the next overhaul to prevent recurrence.

    3. Nature of Event :
    TA set tripped on Turbine trip mechanically indication with abnormal sound at front
    pedestal.
    4. Observations :

    Turbine trip mechanically

    TLR operated
    Boiler tripped
    Master trip relay 86 GT operated
    Low forward power relay operated.

    5. Analysis
    MOP gear coupling found damaged and replaced by same.

    6. Works carried out by maintenance section


    Front pedestal top inspection cover was opened and pedestal was inspected visually .Gear
    coupling & speed governors was inspected found ok externally. CVSM trial was taken found ok.
    During rolling again sound was observed hence turbine hand tripped. Pedestal was opened. Main oil
    pump gear was found damaged. Same was replaced.
    7. Works carried out for the restoration by operation :
    Boiler lighted up

    8. Recommendations to avoid reoccurrence :


    a) Short term Rechecking of MOP gear coupling will be carried out in next opportunity.
    b) Long term
    HP/MOP alignment checking / replacement ,if required will be done during O/H.
