OVERLAND PARK POLICE DEPARTMENT

MEDIA RELEASE
IMMEDIATE RELEASE
October 16, 2015
Suspect Driving Stolen Car Apprehended After Causing 4-Car Injury Crash and Leaving
Scene
On this date, at approximately 8:05 a.m., Overland Park Police Officers responded to an injury
accident in the intersection of W. 123 and Metcalf Avenue. The driver of a blue Ford Focus was
heading east on W. 123 and ran a red light striking the side of a vehicle going north on Metcalf.
The struck two other vehicles before coming to a stop in the intersection.
The driver of the Ford Focus fled the accident and entered a nearby apartment through an
unlocked front door. The female resident found him hiding in a back bedroom. The suspect then
left the apartment and was located on foot in a nearby business complex. The resident was not
harmed.
Leawood Police originally had contact with the vehicle in their city after a citizen called in a
suspected intoxicated driver. The vehicle initially fled from Leawood officers. Several minutes
later, a Leawood officer spotted the car in Overland Park and notified Overland Park dispatch of
the suspicious vehicle
At some point the driver entered the lot of our Sanders police station and quickly turned around
and left the parking lot. A Leawood officer was in the area, but never activated his emergency
lights or engaged in any type of pursuit of the suspect vehicle.
The Ford Focus was reported stolen out of Kansas City, Missouri, but that wasn't known until
after the collision.
The Overland Park Police Traffic Safety Unit continues to investigate this accident.
The driver of the other vehicle was transported to an area hospital in critical condition. Another
driver was transported with serious injuries.
