Students will work individually or in pairs/groups to practice fractions by choosing recipe cards that direct them to place a certain fraction of fruit in a salad bowl. They will state the fraction used and total amount as a mixed number. Students will write their results in math journals as others take turns, allowing the activity to promote discovery through hands-on learning. The activity aligns with 2nd grade TEKS on fractions and is assessed through student explanations and journal entries.

Describe the activity promoting learning by doing or discovery:
Students will take turns choosing a recipe card and complete the activity by placing the appropriate fraction of fruit in the salad bowl. They will conclude their turn by telling other members what fraction they used and the total amount of fruit as a mixed number if applicable. Describe how you will check for understanding or developing the skill: Students will write the results they observed in their Math Journals as the other members of their group draw recipe cards. Include photo/website if possible (you certainly can create your own :).
