Picture 1: Our Group Photo

Personal Reflective Portfolio

We, Insidious, are pleasure to work as a small team in conducting an
independent research. To be honest, it is my first time taking a summer
course abroad which enables me to work with foreigners and broadens my
horizons. My whole experience so far has been absolutely amazing and Im
getting used to life as a local in Atlanta. Sad but true, time is absolutely
flying by. Knowing that its very hard to leave and go back to normal life in
Hong Kong. Im delighted Id chosen this summer program.

Firstly, speaking the point of research work, since our groups does not have
any interview, what we do is based on the literature from designated
readings and the websites of FBO in Clarkston and Sham Shui Po. In Atlanta,
we are working on the Haleys office in Georgia State University (see picture
1). During our research, we set up and share a google excel file , then we
find the information we want from FBOs website. We try to figure out the
type of FBOs in Clarkston and the same procedure in Sham Shui PO so that
we can see how faith orientation influences the FBOs engagement of Placemaking. Sometimes, if Haley is busy with her work and cannot lend her office
for us, we may change to book a room in school library. Actually, we spend
much time on discussing our research topic, sometimes I find it challenge to
understand the key words like place-making and people making, and
then Karlyn and Haley will explain the meaning in details so that we ensure
everyone is on the same platform. In the meantime, we introduce them the
recent immigration policy like right to abroad in Hong Kong that they are
unfamiliar. We help each other and apply what we have learned and know to
the research. In some areas we all feel puzzle, I remember once facing the
problem, and then we seek the lecturers, Adrian and Katherine, for help
through face to face. Finally back to Hong Kong, we usually work in Starbucks
or AAB1213.
Secondly, I want to share my joy and weakness. Living far away from home,
on the other side of the world, has a significant impact to me. During the
days in Atlanta, I have to admit that Im much shy! At the beginning, I am
afraid of making mistakes. Most time, we spend a lot on the assigned
readings. I feel like that Karlyn and Haley are brilliant experts in doing
research as they transmit up to date knowledge to Singe and me.
Sometimes, I cannot keep up with them in the discussion. Luckily everyone is
friendly in my group that I feel included. When I don't understand what has
been said in English and they explain to me. Being here and experiencing a
different culture, a different lifestyle, and a different language has changed
my perception of life. To be honest, I have to pay more attention to the

language proficiency, I've realized now that it is really an opportunity to try

new things and walk outside of my comfort zone.
