Moles

The relative atomic mass is the weighted average mass of naturally

occurring atoms of an element on a scale where an atom of C-12 has a mass
of exactly 12 units.

Cl: - nucleon number:35.5

- Proton number: 17
Cl-35:- nucleon number:35
-proton number:17
-75% of the total amount of Cl found in the environment
Cl-37:-nucleon number:37
-proton number:17
-25% of the total amount of Cl found in the environment

Weighted average mass of Cl=(35*75)+(37*25)/100=35.5

Relative isotopic mass:

- Cl-35 has a relative isotopic mass of 35 grams.
- Cl-37 has a relative isotopic mass of 37 grams.

A mass spectrometer is a device that can be used to measure the mass of

each isotope present in an element. It also compares how much of each
isotope is present.

Empirical formula: smallest ratio of moles of elements in a compound.

Molecular formula: the real number of atoms of each element.

In ionic compounds, the empirical formula is the same thing

as the formula of the compound.
Organic molecules usually have both.
