There are approximately 300,000 airline flights per day. Its hard to believe that an invention created 110 years ago as a
fun bet between two brothers could have such an impact on the human race. Airplanes have allowed humans all over the
world to connect. The airplane has had both positive and negative effects on our society; however, its hard to imagine
where society would be without them.

The Airplane is Born

Before the first flight could take place, the Wright brothers had to go through several
experiments with kites and gliders in order to give pilots steering control of the plane.
Once the brothers were able to work out a way to give pilots steering control, they were off
and running. According to NASA, in order to gain the control and lift needed to make an
airplane fly, the Wright Brothers ended up having to prove a 100 year old scientific
theorywrong! The theory was called the Smeaton coefficient. Even more amazing is
the fact that the 3-aixs control shaft that they developed is still being used on fixed winged
aircrafts today. You would think that with all the modern day technology, a better system
would have been developed by now. If it had not been for the curious minds of the Wright brothers back in the early
1900s, we may never have discovered a way to fly.

The Positive Effects of Airplanes

To most of us, the most important feature of the airplane is that it allows us to travel at speeds that were never
imagined before its conception. This travel allows us to see our families. Air travel can bring us close to family and loved
ones for special occasions such as the birth of a baby, a wedding, or a graduation. Of the 300,000 flights per day, 93,000
of those are commercial flights transporting people! According to Airlines for America, the FAA projects U.S. air travel
demand to top one billion passengers in 2027. Air travel allows us to see the world and take vacations to destinations
thousands of miles away. Before airplanes were invented, very few people ever visited countries that were across the
ocean from them. If they did, they rarely came back home. Humans across the globe will be forever thankful to the
Wright brothers who have allowed us these travel luxuries.

The Negative Effects of Airplanes

Could there really be a downside to this wonderful invention? Unfortunately, yes. Even though this wonderful
invention is the safest form of intercity travel in the United States, it connects human lives, and drives so much of our
economy; there is a negative impact of this wonderful invention. Humans have become so reliant upon air travel that the
300,000 flights per day are having an effect on our environment. Planes are driven by fuel. The airplane industry is
working hard to make airplanes that are more fuel efficient, but these huge engines are emitting fuels into our atmosphere
at alarming rates. Researchers at MIT, whose work is reported by National Geographic, used a computer model to track

plane emissions through the atmosphere. They noted where the emissions were likely to fall and then linked them to
human deaths. They tabulated that around 10,000 deaths per year can be blamed on airplane pollution. Hopefully,
modern day technologies will allow us to develop a way to fuel all engines with other sources than fuel so that we can
continue to enjoy our flights and save our world.

Write your Conclusion here:

___x__ Use a conclusion transition phrase to begin your conclusion paragraph. (highlight in RED font)
__x___ Rephrase your thesis. (highlight with the yellow highlighter)
__x___ Use a clincher. (highlight in blue font)
___x__ Use mature and objective language.
___x__ Write four or more sentences in your conclusion paragraph.
Unquestionably, airplanes have had a huge impact on the human race. Society owes a lot to the Wright brothers
and their amazing invention. The airplane has impacted daily life positively, negatively, and in ways the Wright brothers
could have never imagined. Dependence upon this invention has made it necessary to develop a better and cleaner way
for these vessels to fly. The challenge is a difficult one, but if the Wright brothers figured out how to fly, certainly
humans today can figure out how to fly clean.
