Thematic Area(s): Community Engagement & Leadership
Expected Start Date: December 15th, 2015

GUIDELINES
1. Proposal submission timeline: Proposals should be submitted at least one month prior to the expected
start date of the experience. International experiences require at least two months notice. Contact your
honors advisor immediately for any exceptions.
2. Proposal length: While the quality of the proposal is most important, strong proposals are typically 3-4
pages single-spaced.
3. Proposal format: Please maintain the proposal format (e.g. headers, layout)
4. Time commitment: Experiences should consist of at least 75-90 hours of preparation, execution, and
reflection. This is approximately equivalent to the commitment of honors seminars and pre-approved
experiences.
1. Abstract
Briefly describe the experience. What makes this experience personally meaningful? What goals do you have for this
experience? What is your timeline for this experience?
*If you are proposing an international experience, provide an itinerary.
**If you are developing this experience from an existing opportunity (class with a study tour, campus organization, co-op,
etc.) that is not already an honors seminar or pre-approved experience, how will you differentiate your experience from
what is already required of other students?
For six months, I will be volunteering at Cincinnati Childrens Hospital. The process begins with an application and
interview. Childrens Hospital includes several outpatient facilities located across the Greater Cincinnati Area. The main
site is an international establishment, providing pediatric care to those from all over the world. Once selected, a
volunteers main goal is to reduce the amount of stress on the parents, medical staff, and the child. I will be serving as a
bedside volunteer. My tasks include:
Visiting patients who are unable to leave bed to visit playrooms
Deliver toys and books to the various patients
Provide the parents a break
Work closely to the Child Life Specialists
Serving as a volunteer at Cincinnati Childrens provides exposure to a wide variety of people. I want to increase my
professional skills by interacting with the patients and their families. Also, I want to make an impact on a family or child.
As a volunteer, I would provide a break for families, a source of hope and a smile for a child, and an extra hand to the staff
of Childrens Hospital. It would be a fulfilling experience by easing anothers tasks or stresses. I have a strong background
and enjoy working with children. An opportunity to help children would be very meaningful to me.
Childrens Hospital is a long-standing leader in healthcare and research. They provide high end care to children while
maintaining strong communication with the family. I want to learn from this as I also hope to be a part of the healthcare
field later in life. I would be volunteering at Childrens once a week for two to three hour long shifts. Childrens
volunteers have a commitment of six months.

Community Engagement: Develop a thorough understanding of the world view, beliefs, experiences, selfconsciousness, or history of community members through collaboration.
Childrens Hospital is a large establishment, hosting an international array of patients. Interacting such a wide
variety of people introduces a surplus of different cultures. Childrens works with these difference as a way of cultural
humility. I want to also engage in this and gain a better understanding of how to work with people who are different
from me. Besides the patients, the staff and volunteers may also have differences in culture, experiences, or beliefs. I
want to work together and be united with a common goal of serving the patient.
Community Engagement: Articulate the purpose of service on a social issue or public policy and how service
mutually enhances individual growth and the common good.
Healthcare is a much discussed issue in our world today. Its a growing field. For example, with the baby-boomer
members of our American society growing old, theres an even bigger need for healthcare professionals. There are
also several financial issues surrounding the provisions of healthcare. By volunteering at Childrens hospital, I will be
able to see these problems. I may not be able to solve them. However, I can remove some of the stress from doctors,
patients, nurses, and etcetera and make for a calmer environment. Volunteers provide a strong force in the smooth
implementation of healthcare.
Leadership: Identify personal strengths and areas of growth and evaluate opportunities to maximize skills and
abilities.
As a leader, its very important to recognize ones strengths and weaknesses. Volunteering at Childrens would
provide new faces, new tasks, and new challenges. How I deal with these new things will help me discover my
strengths and weaknesses. Also by conversing with the Childrens staff and the volunteer coordinator, I will be able to
evolve my weaknesses and continue adapting my work ethic.

5. On-going Reflection
The on-going reflection should help you process the experience and progress toward your chosen learning outcomes.
Describe your method for reflecting throughout the experience. Indicate specific reflection questions/topics you plan to
use to guide your reflective process.
Note: A variety of methods can be used for on-going reflection. Some examples are videos, drawings, blogs, songs, and
journals. Reflection topics to consider include your ideas/insights about the experience, connection to other areas of
involvement, and your progress towards the learning outcomes.
During my time volunteering, I will keep a journal to reflect on my weekly tasks, the people I meet, and any other
experiences. Some things I will reflect on include:
Did I meet anyone new and influential today?
What can I do better next week?
