The town was once the capital of the Satavahana dynasty and was an important center of Buddhism. It is popular among tourists for the Amaralingeswara Temple and hosted the 30th Kalachakra attended by the Dalai Lama in 2006. The MP from the area thanked the Urban Development Minister for choosing Amaravathi for the heritage tag, saying it will help preserve the town's history and legacy.

    Mr.RaothankedUnionMinisterforUrbanDevelopmentM.VenkaiahNaiduforchoosingAmaravathifortheheritagetag.HeaddedthatMr.
    NaiduhadpromisedthatspecialattentionwouldbegiventoprotectingandpromotingthecultureofthetownwithUnescohelp.
    Dharanikota,locatednearAmaravathi,wasoncethecapitaloftheSatavahanadynasty,anditlateremergedasakeycentreofBuddhism.The
    townisalsopopularamongtourists,astheAmaralingeswaraTempleislocatedthere.In2006,ithostedthe30thKalachakra,whichwas
    attendedbytheDalaiLama.
    IthankMr.NaiduonbehalfofthepeopleofGunturdistrictforchoosingAmaravathiasaheritagecity.Thismovewillhelpinpreservingthe
