BRAKES AND TIRES

TIRES

Tires are the basic component of the car as it provides

movement and traction.
What we need?
# Tire with SMALLER RIM DIAMETER
# Tire with BIGGER WIDTH
# Tire with LESS ASPECT RATIO

Tire spec. of Formula open wheel racing,

# Slick tire
# Tire width of more than 250mm
# O.D of 650mm
# Rim size of 13 inch
COST : Above 15k per tire
Tire we can afford,
# Treaded tire
# Tire width up to 200mm
# Rim size of 14 inch
COST : Doable at 4k per tire

CONSIDERATIONS FOR SELECTING

A TIRE
# Bigger width
- For cornering
# Smaller rim size and less aspect ratio
- To make OD less for center of gravity
# Cost factor

BRAKES

They play an important role in this event, as

there is separate BRAKING TEST which has to
be satisfied.
What we need ?
# Disc brakes
# Temp withstanding rotor
# Light weight caliber

Why disc brake over drum brake ?

# Less weight
# More response
# Better cooling
Material options for rotor,
# Cast iron
# Maraging steel
# Composite materials (C-C)
Steel based rotors are opted for better temp handling
and at sufficient cost.
COST : Doable at 1.5k per rotor

Brake Caliper
Brake caliper is a friction pad arrangement to press
against the rotor to provide stopping of wheels.
What we need ?
# Light weight brake caliper
- to reduce the wt. of components
# Effective friction pad
COST : Doable at 4k per caliper.
