2015 Challenge Day Out

Kia Ora Parent / Caregivers

This Term our integrated topic is called Challenge and the students will continue to develop the
skills and qualities required to self-manage their learning. Important Challenge learning
opportunities for this term include
Participation in the Year 8 Triathlon event
Completing the drug and alcohol programme with the Life Education Bus
Narrative writing unit
Producing a class lip sync item
Being part of the class touch extravaganza
Recapping number in mathematics
Contributing to the fundraising for the Challenge Day Out
This newsletter will outline the Year 8 Outdoor Education programme for Term Four.
What: An action packed adventure day that will involve the class working in teams and
completing a range of challenges and exciting outdoor adventures. These will include sniper
shooting, zip line, sack riding, river scramble, and evasion. This event will be run by Adventure
Masters under the supervision of Evan Jamieson who also runs our Year 8 camp abseiling and
assault course. All activities, equipment, staff and safety aspects of the day out will be
organised and covered by them.
Where:

On a farm near Outram

Time:

8.30am 5.00pm

When:

Thursday 3rd December (Week 8)

Cost:

$50.00 per student.

Transport / Helpers: We plan to use parent transport and the school vans to get classes to
and from the venue. While events will be co-ordinated and run by the Adventure Masters team,
parents would also be needed to help with supervision on the day. At least six parents per class
would be required, though more would be welcome. There is no cost for adult helpers.

Fundraising Options
The Year 8 teachers would like all the students to help towards the cost of this day out. For
many classes this is the students ASPIRE project for Term 4. Possible payment options can
include:

Job Contract
Rather than parents / caregivers just paying the fee the students have to complete paying jobs
within the family environment. These are jobs that are outside the normal jobs / chores that
they are required to complete within their family. The students will keep a learning log of the
jobs completed and credit raised.
These jobs could include
Washing the family car
Cleaning windows
Collecting firewood
This idea is similar to the contract undertaken by those Year 6 Students who earned money to
obtain a T-shirt when completing the DARE programme.
Capitalist Venture
In the past students have approached their teachers about projects they have to raise money,
these have included
Busking at a market
Working at a family business
Using paying jobs to contribute
This option is instigated by the students who plan all the factors associated with their venture.
Your assistance is crucial to the success of this option and your child will work closely with you.
Parents / Caregivers Paying
This is where Parents / Caregivers pay the money without the students doing anything.

We will be discussing with the students which of the above option/s they will pursue. Hopefully
this early notice will allow opportunities to begin fundraising. It promises to be an amazing fun
day out and a fantastic way to finish the year with each class. Further details will come home
closer to the time. Please complete and return the attached page.
Kind Regards
Year 8 Teachers
