Abstract

The Greater Burgan field is the worlds largest siliciclastic oilfield located in the
desert of south east Kuwait.. With the advent of modern software technology in the
last decade, in 2010 the Kuwait Oil Company partnered with Beicip-Franlab and set
forth to build a full field reservoir model for reservoir management purposes in terms
of depletion planning and maximising recovery. The fields enormity, geological
complexity, over 1000 well completions, 65 years of production history have
presented many challenges in reservoir modelling and simulation.
The main objectives were as follows :
Develop a high resolution 3D geological simulation model of the Greater Burgan
field which provides a comprehensive understanding of heterogeneities and
achieves a good match for pressure, production and saturation histories, for
reliable recovery forecasting under different development plans.
Develop a model which reduces geological uncertainty and optimizes the success
of drilling in this mature basin, by providing geological support for future
horizontal and multilateral wells through a better understanding of reservoir
architecture and continuity.
Develop the model as a reference frame for future modelling and dynamic studies
in Kuwait.
