STRUCTURAL SCHEME

INTRODUCTION
Structural system means the decision about placement and
spacing of columns, position of main beams, seconday
beams and position of expansion and contraction joint.
Proper structural scheme gives maximum economy and
structural efficiency.
Scheme is based upon :
(a) Architectural Scheme.
(b) Operational use of building.

Following points should be kept in mind

finalization of structural.

during

1) Spacing should not be too less to give congested plan,

large number of columns may even the structural cost.
2) Minimum spacing of columns is generally taken as 3.0
m(Approx.10ft) unless hidden in the columns. The
maximum spacing is approximately 10m(32 ft.),leaving
exceptionally large unobstructed halls.

3) The columns are placed as symmetrical as possible. The

reference lines are marked by alphabets and other
directions are designated as numerals.

4) Primary beams usually runs on all columns along the

perpendicular directions.
5) Secondary beams are sometimes provided such that slab
panels become sufficient smaller to get preferable depth,
not exceeding 150mm. Sometime depth may went to
175mm to 200mm.
6) Expansion joint must be provided at spacing of 30 to 50m
and preferably at all changes in the geometry of the
structure. In case of L,I,and T shaped buildings, these are
to be provided at every junction of the various arms of
the buildings.

6) At expansion joint, two sides of the buildings are fully

divided into two separate structures with no connection
in between, the only exception is at foundation, the
building must have separate columns and beams at each
side of the joint.
7) The width of the expansion joint should be 10 to 25mm
with more adopted value for construction in summer
and less value in winter. The width of expansion joint
depend upon thermal expansion of reinforced cement
concrete.

8) The gap for expansion

joint within the slab
should be properly sealed
against
the
water
penetration and allow free
movement
of
the
structure. The material
used for filling the joint
are usually bitumen,cork
or asphaltic mixes with
other
compressible
materials.
