In this article we discuss the ongoing tension between the White House,
Congress, TransCanada, and Nebraskan landowners. TransCanada has petitioned the
American government for permission to extend its Keystone XL pipeline though
Nebraska to connect with American pipelines for ease of transport to the refineries
in the Gulf of Mexico.
President Obama disapproves of the plan and has threatened a vito.
Congress, which is primarily Republican, would rather see the pipeline than not, and
is doing its best to push it through, despite the minority Democrats opposition.
In Nebraska, 7 landowners have banded together to file lawsuits against
TransCanada in an effort to prevent the pipelines installation. The line would force
them to sell sections of their properties, an ultimatum they are desperate to avoid.
Unfortunately for the landowners, the Supreme Court of Nebraska has considerable
precedent that favours TransCanadas claim, and previously existing state law may
override the landowners will and force them to sell the property TransCanada
requires.
