Short Answer
Facilitation of Technology
The Army Uniform training module will be conducted online in a learning
management system environment. The US Army currently utilizes a proprietary system for all
online training. Auto graded quizzes with multiple choice and true/false questions will be
employed as well as flashcard software, photo slideshows, and video. The drill and practice
exercises will consist of photos and descriptions with accompanying questions. If students
provide incorrect answers during practice exercises they will be redirected to the appropriate
information in AR 670-1 to review the material before continuing.
The use of an online training activity will allow soldiers to complete training
requirements at their own pace and will reduce training costs for the US Army. Following the
tenants of behaviorism, the technology used in this activity will only act as simple tools for the
learner and will not be the catalyst of learning (Kanuka, 2008).
Behaviorism Theory
Behaviorism attempts to explain learning as a process which is empirical,
observable, measureable (Harasim, 2012, p. 31). The Army Uniform training module spotlights
4
the predominant teaching and learning strategies of behaviorism by utilizing activities and
assessments which possess observable progress, indicating whether the student has learned the
material or not (Ally, 2008). During War World II this type of behaviorist instructional design
was used to train soldiers by relying on practice and reinforcement (Harasim, 2012, p. 39). This
learning activity relies on the same training procedures and instructional design.
The material to be learned in this module is presented through text, photos, and videos
and is based on information which can be memorized, listed, and recalled and provides the
learner material which can be assessed with right or wrong answers (Harasim, 2012). Pre and
post-tests are incorporated into this learning activity to allow for additional measurable progress.
Encapsulating these characteristics of behaviorism will enable the student to see documented
learning development through the lens of the behaviorist learning theory.
