National Agricultural Land Use Mapping

Net sown area is an important information required for national planning and identification of potential
areas to achieve food security. To provide near real time net sown area of the country on an annual basis
at 1:250,000 scale, multi-temporal AWiFS datasets are being used since 2004-05 onwards.
Land Use / Cover Map (2012-13)

Nine cycles of assessment from 2004-05 to 2012-13 completed

Temporally explicit spatial distribution and variation of the net sown area and crop recurrence are
brought out clearly
Entire 8 cycles data is organised in Bhuvan for visualization and dissemination
Net sown area (including plantations) of India varied between 140 Mha to 149 Mha during 2004 to
2013

Frequency of Crop Occurrence

Using GIS, the frequency of occurrence of kharif and rabi crop has been computed using the 8 cycle
LULC outputs.

About 57.1 M ha in kharif and 44.4 M ha in rabi season are cropped consistently during 200506 to 2011-12.

Besides, 60.7 Mha during kharif and 58.5 Mha during rabi are infrequently cropped. These
areas need to be considered for agriculture intensification.
