Advanced Art Criticism

By: Chace Collins

1. Description
The artist is Michelle Galindo, and she has named her art
The Rainbow Bean-Bag.
A. I can learn from the title it is shaped similar to a beanbag and is full of vibrant colors, hence the Rainbow part.
B. The subjects I recognize are the following: it is an organic
form, there was/is no specific subject, and it is surreal.
C. Looking at the elements of design, describe what
qualities you can see? From viewing the mold, I can clearly
tell its bumpy, colorful, circular, it has wavy lines, and is
cold to the touch.
D. The techniques and media they used include plaster,
acrylic paint, and they used a balloon to shape their mold.

2. Analysis
A. There is no dominant element or focal point, unless you count the
randomized bright colors.
B. The art is asymmetrical as it does not have an exact shape. Upon
looking at it, it gave me a cheery mood from the colors.
C. No, the proportions are not normal, as it is very bumpy and
surrealistic-like.
D. The bumps and the colors create a pattern, as they flow
throughout the mold.
E. My eyes follow the colors and bumps as they move throughout
the piece.
F. What elements bring together, or unify, many parts of the design?
Why? What elements add variety? Why? The art is solid in form, the
color repeats as well as the bumps, which form a pattern, and the
lines and color creates movement and flow.

3. Interpretation
A. Yes, I believe there is symbolism. I believe it
symbolizes LGBT pride.
B. The feeling Michelle wanted to give us was,
Inspired. (Direct quotation from Michelle).
C. No, the art does not remind me of any personal
present or past experiences that I can currently think of.
But if I had to put one thing, Id say it reminds me of
putting multi-colored play-doh together as a small
adolescent.
D. The art reminds me of the recent announcement of
gay marriage being legalized all across America.

4. Judgement
A. While it looks pretty, I feel it couldve been better if
she paid more attention and added more detail.
B. It is surrealistic, organic, and does not represent a
certain subject and or item.
C. I feel as if this artwork is unique. It is surreal, and
colors that blend well together.
D. I think it could be better had she paid more attention
to the painting and molding of her piece.
