    Vivaldi was an Italian Baroque composer born in Venice in 1678. He was ordained as a priest and became known as "the Red Priest" due to his red hair. In 1703 he took a position as master of violin at a girls' orphanage and school called Ospedale della Pietà in Venice, where he worked for over 30 years and composed many of his works. Some of his most famous compositions include The Four Seasons and concertos for various instruments. Vivaldi traveled throughout Europe seeking patrons but ultimately died in poverty in Vienna in 1741.

    1678. He died on July
    28. 1748 in Vienna,
    Austria.

    Important Facts
    At the age of 25, Antonio Vivaldi was named
    master of violin at the Ospedale della Piet (Devout
    Hospital of Mercy) in Venice.
    He became a priest in 1703. Due to his red hair,
    Vivaldi was known locally as "il Prete Rosso," or
    "the Red Priest."
    One of his cantatas, Gloria e Imeneo, was written
    specifically for the wedding of King Louis XV (15).

    Biography
    Early life and career
    He was on March 4. 1678. As a boy his father taught him how to play
    violin. At the age of 15 he began his training to become a priest. He
    finished this in 1703 and was also known as The Red Priest. At age
    25, he was named master of violins at at the Ospedale della Piet in
    Venice. In 1716, he was promoted to music director. In addition to this,
    he had begun regularly writing opera scores by 1715; about 50 of these
    scores remain. Two of his most successful pieces, La constanza
    trionfante and Farnace, were performed multiple times during his life.
    He also, added on to his regular work, accepted a number of short-term
    positions funded by patrons in Mantua and Rome. During his stay in
    Mantua, from around 1717 to 1721, he wrote his four-part masterpiece,
    The Four Seasons.

    Later life and Death


    Even though he was a renowned
    composer, this did not translate into
    lasting financial success. Vivaldi left for
    Vienna, Austria possibly hoping to find a
    spot in imperial court. He found in
    himself prominent patron following the
    death of Charles IV and dies in poverty in
    Vienna on July 28. 1741.
